Making numbers

In our maths learning we have been using 'numicon' to help us build numbers.

Sofija knew that 14 is made up of 10 and 4

Markus knew that 16 is made up of 10 and 6

Can you explain to someone at home how we could make the number 15?

'a_e' split digraph

Oliver's dad came in to help in 1EG yesterday.  He worked with groups to print  a_e split digraph words in paint.

"The magic 'e' is a bit like the 'k' at the beginning of 'knife' isn't it?  You cant hear it....it is silent!"  Kyla

Can you spot the magic 'e' in these words?

Remember the magic 'e' makes the vowel before it say its name!

Watch this 'Alphablocks' video about split digraphs.  It has really helped us learn all about them!

Magic 'e'!

In phonics today we learnt all about split digraphs!  This means when there is an 'e' on the end of a word it makes the vowel in front of it say its name.  The 'e' is always silent.

For example 'cake' has an 'e' at the end.  The 'e' is silent and but makes the 'a' say its letter name.  How magical!

We made our own magic 'e' wands to help us remember.

Making our magic 'e' wands
Careful cutting

Shhhh! The 'e' is silent

Magnetic letter split digraphs.  We joined the two vowels together.

We made the 'e' sparkle because it is silent.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar in sign language

On Monday we had a special treat in 1LJ.  Josh's Mum came in and told us the story of 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar' in sign language.  It was fantastic!  Watch the video below and see if you can follow along with the story.

We have now listened to/watched the story in French, Arabic and sign language!  Wow...what fabulous parents we have.  Thank you.

4th October Spellings

The Year 1 teachers were so proud of all of the children for doing so well with learning their spellings this week. Keep up the enthusiasm and tell us exciting ways that you have managed to practice!

Josie’s mum has bought some bath crayons to practise in the bath!

Ethan’s mum is starting to use this website to make dotted words for Ethan to trace over…

Today the children were given their new spellings to learn. Again the children will be asked to spell their words on Wednesday morning. Please ensure your child has their spelling wallet in school every Thursday for us to put the new spelling list in.
Below is a list of all 10 new spellings. Your child may have less than 10 at the moment but do tell your class teacher if you feel your child can cope with more.
