My Toys

We hope you are enjoying your half term holiday so far! Here is a reminder of your holiday home learning task!

We gave each of you a purple booklet called 'My Toys'. Please fill the boxes with photos or drawings of you with your favourite toy now and when you were a baby. Then you could write a sentence for each explaining why you have chosen each toy.

Here is Miss Jenkins' homework...

Here is a picture of me and my favourite toy when I was 6 years old. She was a tiny doll and I named her Sophie. I used to carry her everywhere with me and even made her a house from shoe boxes! My Mum helped me paint the tiny house and sew a tiny bed for her! I wonder where she is now?!

The Year One Ugly Bug Ball!

Oh we crawled, oh we crawled to the Ugly Bug Ball.  What a happy time had there...one and all!  At the Ugly Bug Ball!

We invited our families to help us make Ugly Bug masks and hats.  It turns out, we're very creative!

We had a ball in the hall!  We sang 5 of our favourite bug songs including a rather cheeky song about a bumble bee!

Then we had a boogie with our families.  We had bees on their knees, ants in our pants and snails leaving trails on the dance floor!

Then we judged the Great Begbrook Bug Bake-Off!

Thank you to all our families for making our Ball such a special occasion. We all had a fantastic time we hope you did too.

Ugly Bug Ball!

On Tuesday 23rd October we are holding our very own Begbook Bug Ball!

All bugs are invited...worms,ladybirds,grasshoppers,spiders and even frogs!

If you're free you can come in at 9am and help your child make a bug hat or mask and then we are going to the hall for a sing and boogie!

After we have waltzed like wood louse and grooved like greenfly we are going to head back to the classrooms for a yummy feast of snails, caterpillars and ants! Please bring your child in with snacks to share...perhaps with a bug theme!

We can't wait! Have a sing along to the video below...

Marvellous Moving Minibeast Pictures

Our marvellous minibeast moving pictures are finished and they really are marvellous!

Today we cut out our minibeast, decorated it, attached a straw, and made a path for our minibeasts to walk on.

What do you think?  We are rather proud of ourselves!

"I like my tree."

"I like my butterfly."

"I like the pond, I would change the frog."

"I like the worm, I might put in a rain cloud."

Super Snail Race

Wow what an exciting day!  "Today we raced the snails!" (Max, 1MP).  The snails had to start in the red circle and race to the edge of the tough tray.

We predicted which snail would win and said why we thought that.

Which snail do you think won?

Some snails tried to cheat by starting first so we talked about how to make the test fair.

It was a very exciting race...

but by the end there was only one winner who got the first place trophy.

We were top newspaper reporters who wrote about the race in a newspaper report:

Maya said "the snail race was great!"

We would love to know what you thought about our snail race.  Why don't you write a comment for our blog?

Well done Year 1! You have all done so well learning your spellings this week. Keep up the good work!

Here are your new spellings for next week:

1. us
2. sad

4. this
5. with
6. that
7. thank
8. me
9. we

As always we will be asking the children to write their spellings on Wednesday morning so keep thinking of exciting and creative ways to practise them.

Moth visitors to Year 1

Julie from the Avon Wildlife Trust came to visit with some fluttery friends.  She brought in bug pots containing different species of moths and we all had a close look through a magnifying glass.

Julie told us lots of moth facts, including that the largest moth in the world is as big as a ruler!

My mask would help me hide in the leaves

"We learnt that moths can camouflage themselves." Jacob

"We learnt that moths are nocturnal." Harry

"We learnt that bats eat moths at night!"  Joe

Julie showed us a stuffed bat.  It had huge ears!

We made our own moth masks, carefully thinking about the patterns we used.

We played a game outside where the blindfolded bat had to find the moth by making beeping noises!  It was really fun!

We loved having Julie to visit.  She is fantastic and knows loads about nature in the surrounding areas.  If you are free this Saturday, Julie is leading a free 'Spooky nature day' down at Snuff Mills with lots of fun activities!  See the flyer below:

Minibeast Habitats

Today we learnt all about where minibeasts live.

We discovered that they live...under rocks, in ponds, in the soil, in the trees, under leaves, in dark corners, under wet logs....and hopefully not too many live in our houses!

We painted our own minibeast settings using watercolours.  By mixing colours we got accurate shades for each habitat.  Here are some pictures of us painting.

Our teachers think we are fabulous artists!

Look out for more arty pictures on Friday. We will be adding to our creations  with moving minibeasts.  Watch this space!
